A friend of mine describes our recent emails and trading of links about open-source development vs proprietery near-monopolies like Microsoft as, “just another chapter in the eternal debate”.
That is a fine description for friendly discussions like we have - and its true that Microsoft may be a better monopoly than if it was replaced with one of its competitors like IBM, Oracle, or Sun.
However, I often feel deep in my gut, that right now it might be about developer rivalry, but in the future it may be about real human rights and freedom. I want to start early on the side of the freedom fighters.

Aw, what about the poor commies in the tank? (I can call them commies because this movies was from the early 80s)
More than a few MS developers are trying OS development, or even switching entirely! They’re offering more and more opensource and cross platform stuff in response, go and google SilverLight.
By the way, your friend sounds like a pompous MS zombie.
